A never-before-seen email reveals that even the people tasked with delivering the Berejiklian Government’s stadium splurge think it’s a bad idea.

The email (attached) was sent by the Chair of Venues NSW, Christine McLoughlin, a respected private sector executive and company director.

In the email, Ms McLoughlin says “The $2.3 billion allocated by the NSW Government to rebuild two stadiums will haunt them until the next election”.

Venues NSW is the agency responsible for managing NSW Government publicly-owned sports and entertainment venues including ANZ stadium, the new Western Sydney Stadium at Parramatta, the Newcastle Entertainment Centre and the WIN Sports and Entertainment Centre at Wollongong.

In an email to VenuesLive, the company that has just been appointed to operate the new Western Sydney Stadium, the Chair of Venues NSW let loose mocking the decision to spend $729 million rebuilding Allianz  Stadium, asking “what’s the business case and will crowds fill it?”

The CEO of Venues NSW is also CC’d into the email.

Ms McLoughlin signals that “inaccuracies”, such as “the cost of ANZ rebuild”, will need to be followed up.

The frank email between senior figures directly involved in delivering the stadium policy is an indictment of Premier Gladys Berejiklian’s misguided decision to splurge billions of dollars on Sydney stadiums.

As well as being the Chair of Venues NSW, Ms McLoughlin is Director of Suncorp Group Ltd, nib Holdings Ltd, and the McGrath Foundation.

Quotes attributable to NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley

“This confirms that the Berejiklian Government’s own sports stadium managers are opposed to their extravagant stadiums splurge.

“The Venues NSW Chair has hit the nail on the head – the crowds will not fill the new palace at Moore Park.”
