TRUE COST OF INCREASED NEWCASTLE LIGHT RAIL BUDGET REVEALED

-->

Secret Berejiklian Government documents reveal, not only the true cost of the Newcastle Light Rail, but that the project has also blown out by millions.

The leaked cabinet documents reveal that the estimated total cost of the Newcastle Light Rail is $290.2 million.

And that the project’s budget has been revised upwards by an extra $35 million.

It’s the first time the true cost of the project has been revealed, within the $500 million Revitalising Newcastle program.

Document extract:

The Transport for NSW document contradicts a claim made by Premier Gladys Berejiklian on Tuesday that the light rail would be delivered within budget.

The revelations also follow the Berejiklian Government’s refusal to release the cost of the Newcastle Light Rail under a Freedom of Information request by Member for Newcastle Tim Crakanthorp.

Quotes attributable to NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley

“This is $290 million dollars and rising for 2.7 kilometres of light rail.

“The Premier misled people this week in Newcastle. This document reveals a $35 million cost blow out to date.”

Quotes attributable to Member for Newcastle Tim Crakanthorp

“The community has every right to know how much the light rail is costing them and this secret document reveals a clear cost blow out.

“The Liberal Government has tried to keep this figure secret – it shouldn’t take a leaked document for this to be revealed.”

Quotes attributable to Shadow Minister for Transport Jodi McKay

“There are serious questions the Premier needs to answer about why the cost of this project has been kept under wraps.

“Now we can not only see the true cost of this project but we can also see that it has increased.

“The question remains: is this $35 million increase due to more project mismanagement?”
