Toole keeps NSW in the dark about councils

The Baird Government is refusing to outline a road map for NSW councils facing amalgamation – by failing to answer simple questions such as what will happen to those councils deemed ‘Unfit for the Future.’

The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) – the agency charged with managing the Government’s council amalgamation program – is currently assessing council submissions and will make its recommendations to the Government later this year.

But Local Government Minister Paul Toole has refused to answer questions Mr Primrose has asked on behalf of councils across the state, including:

  • Will administrators be appointed if a council doesn’t meet IPART’s criteria?
  • What will happen to those councils that do not choose to voluntarily amalgamate?
  • What the organisational structure of any new council following the ‘Fit for the Future’ process will be?

Quotes attributable to Shadow Minister for Local Government Peter Primrose:

“The entire Fit for the Future process has lacked transparency, which is a common theme of the Baird Government.”

Minister Toole either won’t say or doesn’t know. Either way, he is keeping the people of NSW in the dark about his real agenda for local councils.”

“When he refuses to answer simple questions and instead resorts to evasion, you’d be forgiven for suspecting there is an ulterior motive at work here.”

“People want to know who will be providing their local services and who will be representing them. To fob them off with hot air is an insult. The people of NSW deserve better.”
