SYDNEY BUS SELL-OFF CRISIS- LABOR MOVES CENSURE MOTION AGAINST THE BEREJIKLIAN GOVERNMENT

-->

The NSW Opposition this afternoon moved a censure motion on State Transport Minister Andrew Constance – over the Berejiklian Government’s decision to privatise Sydney buses.

The Government will sell off 233 Sydney bus routes servicing the Inner West to Strathfield and Olympic Park and down through southern Sydney.

NSW Labor Leader Luke Foley asked Mr Constance why’d he’d broken a written contract guaranteeing bus drivers jobs for five years – without any consultation, warning or public debate.

With traffic now 7 kilometres an hour slower on Sydney roads, Labor MP’s also asked the Government why:

  • bus drivers are being blamed for buses running late
  • if bus stops were removed from the Inner West to make it more attractive for private operators and
  • if the Government plans to privatise every bus in Sydney

The public gallery was packed with bus drivers who’d earlier protested in Macquarie Street against privatisation.

Sydney has had public bus services in the Inner West since 1932.

Quotes attributable to NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley:

“Minister Constance didn’t respond to the pleas of commuters and bus drivers to fix the timetables. Instead he blamed bus drivers for his failures as a Minister. He believes in fantasy – that buses will run faster in very congested areas.

‘The Minister and his predecessor the Premier ambushed bus drivers – giving them no warning they were going to be sacked  from their  public transport jobs – after re-assuring them their jobs were safe.

‘They broke a written contract with these drivers about their future. Now this looks like the start of wholesale privatisation of transport – and this Government has no mandate for that.”

Quotes attributable to Deputy Opposition Leader Michael Daley:

‘The former CEO of State Transit is on record as saying that the buses are not only delivering every saving they were asked for – they were even making additional savings. Yet Andrew Constance insists on blaming drivers – who are innocent of any crime.’

‘The people of NSW have had a gutful of this Government, its lies and its intention to privatise everything they can.
