Statement on passing of Richie Benaud

Statement from NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley and Shadow Minister for Sport Guy Zangari

It is with great sadness that our nation learns of the passing of Richie Benaud.

Richie Benaud had a lifelong love affair with cricket and did more than any figure in Australian history to turn it into our nation's great pastime.

He was a man intrinsic to the rhythms of Australian life. His contribution to our nation is incalculable.

Following an illustrious cricket career, including a successful period captaining the Australian team, it was as a commentator that Richie became the voice of cricket – and the voice of summer.

Forget the cicadas in the backyard, each year you knew summer had arrived when Richie Benaud's dry insights began to emanate from television screens across the country.

Richie's wit, his dignity and his grace are irreplaceable. His mentoring to generations of Australian cricketers and young people leaves an indelible legacy.

Born in Penrith and a proud New South Welshman, he was a treasure to our state and the nation.

On behalf of NSW Labor, we pass on our condolences to Richie Benaud's family, friends and the entire cricket community.

The summers will go on but they won’t be the same.
