Statement on Malcolm Fraser

I am saddened by the passing of Australia’s 22nd Prime Minister, the Right Honourable John Malcolm Fraser.

My thoughts and prayers are with his wife Tamie and their family. Our nation today grieves one of the giants of Australian politics.

The passing of Malcolm Fraser represents the closing of a colourful and, at times, controversial political era for both of Australia’s great political parties.

For the Australian Labor Party, Malcolm Fraser will always be remembered as the wily adversary of our political hero Gough Whitlam.

The two giants battling it out in the nation’s chief forum and their post-politics friendship will forever be part of our political history.

Mr Fraser was always a man of his convictions. His principled stance against racism in all its forms was highlighted during the Apartheid era.

Especially in his later years, Mr Fraser was a humanitarian conscience of our nation – inspiring many with his compassion towards refugees and bold willingness to speak out.

As we reflect on Malcolm Fraser’s life and contribution to our nation, I will remember a man who was determined and driven to leave his mark on our society.
