NSW Labor today called for Health Minister Jillian Skinner to conduct an immediate review of security arrangements at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA) after a reported violent brawl within the hospital last night.

Shadow Health Minister Walt Secord today accused the government of implementing a cloak of secrecy at all levels of the health system.

Disappointingly, it appears the Baird Government tried to cover up the violent brawl in the hospital in which a nurse and two security guards were injured. The incident involved up to 25 people.

The Government has an obligation to ensure doctors, nurses and paramedics are safe when they are attending to patients.

Mr Secord demanded an explanation as to why the Government did not tell the community about a major incident in one of the State’s busiest hospitals.

Quotes attributable to Shadow Minister for Health Walt Secord

“Patients and staff have a right to be safe in our State’s hospitals.”

“This incident is absolutely unacceptable and such behaviour has no place in our health system.”

“Hospitals are for treating the vulnerable and sick; not havens from the law.”

“Whether it is manipulating elective surgery lists or distorting emergency department waiting times, the Baird Government needs to come clean on the incident last night.”
