NSW Labor Leader Luke Foley said the $2.5 billion the Liberals plan to spend on knocking down and rebuilding Sydney stadiums could clear the school maintenance backlog in the Macarthur region 82 times.

Mr Foley was with the Member for Macquarie Fields Anoulack Chanthivong, Member for Campbelltown Greg Warren and Labor candidate for Camden Sally Quinnell at Leumeah High School which has a $2.1 million school maintenance backlog.

The total backlog for Macarthur is $30.34 million

  • $13.7 million in Macquarie Fields
  • $9.94 million in Campbelltown
  • $6.64 million in Camden

Macarthur is one of the fastest growth areas of Sydney, adding pressure to school class sizes. There are 189 demountables in the Macarthur region and 13 schools are at 100 percent capacity.

Mr Foley said schools across the Macarthur will be left to suffer under the Berejiklian Government’s out of touch decision to commit an obscene amount of money to knocking down and rebuilding Sydney stadiums.

The stadium cash splash will also do nothing to alleviate congestion at Campbelltown Hospital, where almost 53 percent of patients wait longer than four hours at the emergency department.

The median waiting time for non-urgent elective surgery across the South Western Sydney Local Health District is 190 days. There are 8,332 patients waiting for elective surgery in this district (as of 30 September, 2017).

I will not support this obscene amount of money being spent on a couple of Sydney stadiums.

“This money should go to schools and hospitals; they come first and will always do so under a Labor government.

Quotes attributable to Member for Macquarie Fields Anoulack Chanthivon

“Parents would be scratching their heads that Leumeah High School has a staggering $2 million maintenance backlog and yet this Government prefers to fund stadium upgrades over classrooms and urgent repairs.

“It’s insulting and indicative of the contempt the Berejiklian Liberal Government holds for our local area. They simply don’t care.

“Our local students and teachers deserve the best possible learning environment, and I will always fight for our fair share.”

The priorities of the Liberal Government are completely out of whack. How can they let our schools and hospitals continue to decline but they see fit to blow $2.5  billion knocking down and rebuilding two perfectly serviceable sports stadiums?

Quotes attributable to Labor candidate for Camden Sally Quinnell

“The breathtaking waste and mismanagement of public money which Premier Berejiklian is presiding over should put an end once-and-for-all to the myth of the Liberals’ fiscal responsibility. They’re robbing the public purse, plain and simple.”
