LUKE FOLEY ANNOUNCES ABORIGINAL ELDER AUNTY NORMA INGRAM AS LABOR’S CANDIDATE FOR NEWTOWN

-->

NSW Labor leader Luke Foley has announced Aboriginal elder Aunty Norma Ingram as Labor’s candidate for Newtown in the 2019 State Election.

Wiradjuri elder, Aunty Norma has lived in the Inner West, since she moved to Erskineville with her family as a child, after she was born on a reservation in Cowra.

She went to school at Erskineville Primary and Stanmore Girls High. She later went on to study at Harvard University, becoming the first ever Aboriginal woman to graduate from there.

Despite having steady employment her whole life, most recently as a TAFE teacher, Aunty Norma can no longer afford to live in the area she has long called home.

Aunty Norma’s current living circumstances represent the inequality that now characterises parts of Sydney’s Inner City.

Like many others trying to make ends meet as Sydney’s rental market continues to squeeze families out, Aunty Norma is on the public housing waiting list with no certainty about when she will be able to get permanent accommodation.

Aunty Norma has been active in many radical political movements, including protesting for land rights with Aboriginal leaders like Charlie Perkins, establishing the Aboriginal Tent Embassy, and campaigning against the South African apartheid regime. In 2016, she ran for City of Sydney Council as a Labor candidate.

If elected, Aunty Norma will represent her constituent’s interests, with unique insight in the face of an increasingly hostile Liberal-National Government.
