LISMORE SCHOOL MAINTENANCE BACKLOG DOUBLES MAKING IT THE WORST IN THE STATE

-->

The Berejiklian-Barilaro Government has ignored the needs of Lismore schools, many affected by flood damage, letting the maintenance backlog almost double and leaving the electorate with the highest backlog in the state.

Despite calls for the Government to prioritise the massive state-wide school maintenance backlog over Sydney stadiums, schools in Lismore have been left behind.

New figures released under Freedom of Information laws reveal that the school maintenance backlog in Lismore has increased from $11 million to $21 million – an increase of 93 per cent.

The statewide backlog usually includes money for basic necessities like toilet and sewer repairs, carpets, painting, fixing damaged rooves, installing guttering, replacing windows and other general repairs.

But Lismore’s maintenance backlog is compounded by the fact many schools are waiting on money to fix last year’s flood damage.

Mr Foley and Shadow Minsiter for the North Coast Walt Secord joined Labor’s candidate for Lismore Janelle Saffin outside the Rivers Secondary College, to highlight NSW Labor’s commitment to prioritise regional schools and hospitals before Sydney stadiums.

The Rivers Secondary College Kadina High Campus has the highest maintenance backlog in the electorate with a staggering $1.7 million (see table over page), next on the list is Wollumbin High School with $1.6 million needed.

Quotes attributable to NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley

“Fixing up schools in Lismore should be the Berejiklian Government’s priority – not rebuilding Sydney stadiums.

“The $2.2 billion stadium splurge is a scandalous waste of money. That money should go to regional schools and hospitals; they come first and will always do so under a Labor government.”

Quotes attributable to Labor Candidate for Lismore Janelle Saffin

“Lismore teachers and students need well-maintained facilities to create the best learning environments.

“The community has a right to be angry that they are being over-looked while this government splurges $2.7 billion on Sydney stadiums.”
