The depth of cuts by the Liberal-National Government to TAFE teaching and support staff has been revealed with new figures showing redundancy expenses are set to eclipse $150 million over the past four years.

Redundancy and restructuring expenses for TAFE NSW since 2014/15 has come in at a whopping $142.69 million, according to Treasury figures supplied to the NSW Labor Opposition.

The figure includes a projected $8.87 million in redundancy costs for this year but given the Government’s estimates have consistently come in well below the actual figure the final amount is expected to be higher.

Since 2012 when the Government began its assault on TAFE, 5,700 teachers and support staff have been sacked, courses cut and fees hiked by around a quarter, resulting in 175,000 fewer enrolments.

Labor has committed to re-build one of the great institutions of our state and will guarantee at least 70 per cent of vocational education and training funding for TAFE. It will also set up a Private Providers Investigations Unit to target dodgy providers and restore confidence to the vocational education sector.

“This is a deliberate assault on the career aspirations of hundreds of thousands of young people in this state.”
