Liberal Mayor putting public health at risk must step aside

The NSW Opposition is calling on the Liberal Mayor of Hurstville to immediately stand aside, following allegations of illegal excavation that may be putting locals at risk of contact with asbestos particles.

Mayor Con Hindi is under investigation from his own council for excavating a Mortdale site without authorisation, and repeatedly failing to remediate the asbestos contaminated site.

"Mr Hindi's position as Mayor is completely untenable,” Shadow Minister for Local Government Peter Primrose said.

“This Liberal Mayor must stand aside immediately until the inquiry is complete and this issue is resolved.

"Asbestos is a serious public health issue this Liberal Government has neglected, and this situation proves councils need more support to manage the safe removal of asbestos.

“Reports that Mr Hindi is putting the broader public at risk, with potentially asbestos-contaminated soil from his site draining into the gutter, are alarming.

"It's worrying to hear allegations of a Liberal Mayor using his position to intimidate and shirk responsibility in a matter with public health consequences.

“It is unacceptable that the Mayor of Hurstville is refusing to do the right thing and remediate the contaminated site.

“Until this mess is sorted out, it is unacceptable for Mr Hindi to remain in his position as Mayor.”
