Labor to focus on growing renewable energy to tackle climate change and create the jobs of the future

A Foley Labor Government will prioritise addressing the issue of climate change – by supporting the growth of the renewable energy sector in NSW.

Labor knows that climate change is one of the most serious threats facing our state and country – and we must play our part in addressing this challenge.

Labor will support the growth of the renewable energy sector in NSW – as well as creating jobs and economic opportunities across the state.

Under Labor’s clean energy plan, we will:

  • Maintain the state’s electricity network in public ownership in order to support the growth of decentralised and renewable energy, including battery storage;
  • Legislate a 20 per cent renewable energy target by 2020 for NSW;
  • Invest $37.4 million to replace fluorescent and incandescent lighting with LED technology in hospitals – cutting power bills by approximately $72.6 million over 15 years;
  • Remove the Coalition Government’s draconian restrictions on approvals for wind farm developments – encouraging the wind industry whilst ensuring proper community consultation with affected communities;
  • Ensure the Hunter region is a Renewable Energy Hub - investing $14 million in helping the region capitalise on the opportunities in a low carbon global economy;
  • Provide consumer protections for solar households and ensuring a fair price for those who sell excess energy back to the grid;
  • Purchase electricity for NSW Government departments and agencies from renewable sources where possible.

A Foley Labor Government will pursue a program of clean and affordable energy as we tackle the issue of climate change and our growing energy needs.
