NSW Labor today has re-affirmed its opposition to the controversial West Byron mega-development which could change Byron Bay forever.

The development is planned 2.5 kilometres west of Byron Bay. The two developments that make up the West Byron development were submitted to Byron Shire Council in late 2017 and was put on exhibition from 14 December 2017.  Originally, the closing date for submissions was 7 February 2018, but it was extended to March 29, 2018.

Labor issued its statement after the closing of submissions.

Labor’s announcement was made today by NSW Labor Leader Luke Foley, Shadow Minister for the North Coast Walt Secord and Labor’s candidate for Ballina Asren Pugh.

They said the mega-development would pour thousands more residents into the struggling Byron Shire which is already buckling under overstretched infrastructure. With a population increase of up to 25 per cent more residents for Byron Bay and an additional 14,000 car movements on Ewingsdale Road alone, Byron will simply not cope.

Mr Foley has spoken out against the project on at least four occasions since 2014.

Originally, in October 2014, Mr Foley spoke out against the scheme and said that it was official NSW ALP policy to oppose the scheme.

During the 2015 State election, he re-committed to opposing the scheme and in 2017 he also spoke against the project.

Today they announced the continuation of Labor’s opposition to West Byron.

Mr Foley, Mr Secord and Mr Pugh called on the NSW Government to drop the plan and to stop the uncertainty which has been running for more than five years.
