LABOR INVESTIGATION REVEALS 17,000 STUDENTS IN NSW HAVE BEEN DUPED BY DODGY EDUCATION PROVIDERS

-->

Shonky private vocational education providers are continuing to target students across NSW with almost 17,000 students affected, due to an unwillingness by the Berejiklian Government to crackdown on the failed service providers.

A NSW Labor investigation has revealed up 25,313 students have been affected since the introduction of Smart and Skilled.

The Freedom of Information documents show 51 training providers have been terminated or suspended since October 2016.

The reasons for these shonks being terminated or suspended are extremely concerning; including being deregistered by Australia skills quality regulator (ASQA), using unqualified teachers and instructors, subcontracting, using incorrect training tools & assessments and insolvency.

NSW Labor Leader Luke Foley has reiterated his call for the NSW Government to adopt Labor’s policy and introduce a Private Provider Investigation Unit to help weed out the dodgy providers.

The investigation unit would investigate dodgy training providers and ensure that taxpayer money is only given to reputable organisations.

The top ten suburbs targeted by dodgy providers are:

The range of courses targeted include Hospitality, Business, Early Childhood and Leadership & Management.

Mr Foley said thousands of prospective students are being jeopardised each year by the Liberal-National Government’s failure to set up an investigative taskforce.

Quotes attributable to NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley

“If this many dodgy providers are coming to notice without any concerted government efforts to weed them out, I fear this is the tip of the iceberg. A concerted crackdown is urgently needed.

“Students are being targeted year after year by these shonks. The NSW Government needs to step up and enact this taskforce so more people don’t fall prey to these charlatans.

“You have to ask why the Berejiklian Government isn’t cracking down on these dodgy providers who are offering quick fix diplomas and certificates.”

Quotes attributable to Shadow Minister for Skills Prue Car

“Dodgy training providers continue to thrive under the Berejiklian Government’s disastrous Smart and Skilled policy.

“Vulnerable students are being targeted by bogus companies to sign up for courses they won’t be able to complete.

“NSW needs to clean up the VET sector and that means properly funding TAFE, cracking down on dodgy providers and encouraging students back into vocational education and training.”

Quotes attributable to Member of the Legislative Council Daniel Mookhey

“People wishing to upskill their qualifications have become the prey of John Barilaro’s handpicked private providers. If this money had gone to TAFE, thousands of students would never have had to deal with the lurk merchants who infiltrated the State’s training system.”
