HUNDREDS OF TAFE TEACHERS FACING THE SACK AS LUKE FOLEY CAMPAIGN FOR SCHOOLS AND HOSPITALS BEFORE STADIUMS MAKES ITS FIRST STOP

Opposition leader Luke Foley’s first stop on his week-long trip Schools and Hospitals Before Stadiums Tour was at a rally this afternoon to save Padstow TAFE.

To the cheers of TAFE supporters he pledged a Labor Government will save the vocational training institution – now suffering under a savage ideological assault by the Berejiklian-Barilaro government.

Mr. Foley is spending the next week in the Schools and Hospitals Before Stadiums bus touring the state to oppose the Government’s $2.7 billion stadium splurge.

Since the Government began its assault on TAFE, 5,700 teachers and support staff have been sacked, courses cut and fee hiked by around a quarter, resulting in 175,000 fewer enrolments.

TAFE campuses have been closed – replaced by a new format – effectively a shopfront – to replace bricks and mortar institutes.

$145 million was wasted on a new dud computer system that lost student fees and citations.

Treasury documents show that more than $53 million in TAFE redundancy and restructuring costs are expected this year.

Based on current numbers this could amount to around 600 teachers – or more than a tenth of the current academic workforce - being cut across the TAFE network.

Padstow TAFE has a key role in local training – as a state centre of excellence for aircraft maintenance training, and a horticultural centre of excellence, with an award-winning floristry training facility.

Quotes attributable to Luke Foley MP NSW Opposition Leader

“TAFE has been an outstanding educational institution for more than 130 years yet this government has turned training for jobs into a wasteland. Only Labor will save TAFE.’

“We guarantee at least 70 per cent of all vocational education and training funding will go to TAFE.’

Quotes attributable to Prue Car MP Shadow Minister for Skills

“Business and industry in many sectors desperately needs trained and skilled staff but it can’t get them this way.

“The Liberals and Nationals just don’t get it. Enrolments are in freefall, course fees are going through the roof and yet this Government continues to slash our TAFE.”
