NSW Labor Leader Luke Foley said Holsworthy’s schools and hospitals will be robbed after the Liberal government committed an obscene $2.5 billion on knocking down and rebuilding Sydney stadiums.

The out-of-touch Liberal Government’s stadium strategy will deny the area of money that could and should be spent on helping its schools and hospitals.

The decision will directly affect Holsworthy schoolchildren who face years of being taught in demountables or in classrooms with leaky rooves and broken toilets.

And, it will also do nothing to alleviate the congestion at local hospitals where patients wait months for elective surgery.

Labor Leader Luke Foley was joined Labor’s Candidate for Holsworthy Charishma Kaliyanda at Casula Public School which has a maintenance backlog of $1.22 million and is at 100 per cent capacity.

The problems facing Holsworthy schools and hospitals are detailed below:

  • The school maintenance backlog stands at $11.1 million;
  • There are 6 schools at 100 per cent capacity;
  • There are 47 demountables at schools;
  • 40.9 per cent of patients at Liverpool Hospital wait more than four hours – making it the third most overstretched emergency department in the state;
  • The median waiting time for non-urgent surgery is 199 days, with some patients waiting 355 days;
  • At the end of June there were 2,214 patients on the elective surgery waiting list, most of whom are waiting for cataract extraction (394 patients).

Mr Foley said the $2.5 billion could be spent building four regional hospitals; or 139 primary schools; or 62.5 high schools.

Quotes attributable to NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley

I will not allow this obscene amount of money to be spent on a couple of Sydney stadiums.

“This is money that should go to schools and hospitals; they come first and will always do so under a Labor government.

“When thousands of children in the region are being taught in demountables and thousands of people are waiting months for elective surgery it is a crime that this out of touch Government has committed to spend such a huge amount of money on a couple of stadiums."

Quotes attributable to Labor Candidate for Holsworthy Charishma Kaliyanda

“The people of Holsworthy will be wondering why, if this Government has got so much money in the bank, life under the Liberal National Government is getting harder, not easier.

"Whether you’re a student or a teacher, it’s difficult to work in an environment that’s not conducive to learning - and the Government is doing nothing to invest in the educational potential of our community.

“The Berejiklian Government is failing on the basics. We’ve got a crisis of overcrowding while kids in classrooms have no ceiling fans in summer, busted heaters in winter, broken toilets and leaking rooves.”
