NSW Labor Leader Luke Foley has welcomed Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten’s announcement of a $3 billion investment to accelerate the delivery of the Sydney Metro West train line.

NSW Labor Leader Luke Foley has welcomed Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten’s announcement of a $3 billion investment to accelerate the delivery of the Sydney Metro West train line.

The announcement by Mr Shorten further signals that Labor’s key public transport priority for western Sydney is a new fast rail line between Westmead, Parramatta and the Sydney CBD.

Mr Foley said that a government he leads will be able to deliver Metro West sooner because a State Labor government will re-allocate billions of dollars from Liberal priorities such as the Northern Beaches mega tunnel and the conversion of heavy rail to metro from Sydenham to Bankstown.

The Liberals have yet to announce a delivery date for Metro West beyond a vague promise it will be up and running within the next decade. Labor will deliver it earlier.

Mr Foley first indicated in his budget reply last year that Metro West is a Labor priority as the region’s population grows by an additional one million people in the next 20 years.

Quotes attributable to NSW Labor Leader Luke Foley

“I welcome Bill’s announcement that a government he leads will support the fast tracking of Metro West. “It’s the Liberals’ last priority – but it is Labor’s first.

“We will reallocate billions of dollars from Ms Berejiklian’s Northern Beaches Tunnel and from the conversion of the existing Bankstown line. “That’s how we’ll deliver a new Western Metro years before the Liberals could.

“Labor will also do the planning for future extensions to the Western Metro. “Labor’s top transport priority is the Western Metro.”
