NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley today announced Councillor Stephen Lawrence as the Country Labor candidate for Dubbo in next year’s State Election.

Mr Foley stopped in Dubbo on Tuesday in the ‘Schools and Hospitals before Stadiums’ bus on day three of his statewide tour.

Mr Foley said Stephen had the right credentials to take on the Nationals in the seat as the Liberal-National Government stubbornly presses ahead with its decision to splurge $2.7 billion on Sydney stadiums.

Mr Foley said the decision to spend billions of dollars on knocking down and rebuilding two Sydney stadiums while 100,000 children are being taught in demountables and elective surgery waiting lists are at record highs is the height of irresponsibility.

Stephen is a barrister and councillor on Dubbo Regional Council, with a strong track record in community and legal work, both in Australia and overseas. As a councillor he has focused on addressing crime and other social problems. He is passionate about ensuring Dubbo’s concerns will be heard in Macqaurie Street.

Mr Foley said Stephen would be a strong voice for the local Dubbo community which has been dealt a raw deal by the Nationals under Troy Grant who, as a member of the current government, voted for the ban on greyhounds, forced council mergers and now the hated stadiums plan.

Quotes attributable to NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley

“Labor will take the fight to the Nationals in Dubbo and Stephen Lawrence will lead it with a positive Labor agenda.

“The people of Dubbo will have a clear choice come next March – a government that puts Sydney stadiums before our children’s’ education and our families’ health.

“I am pleased to announce Stephen as Labor’s candidate. He will hold the Nationals to account over their support for Gladys Berejiklian’s failed Sydney-centric policies.

“He will ensure that country NSW issues are more than just lip service as they have been under the Nationals.”

Quotes attributable to Country Labor candidate for Dubbo Stephen Lawrence

“The Nationals have failed Dubbo, waiting lists have ballooned, our councils were forcibly merged, as was our police command. TAFE has been gutted and crime rates are unacceptably high. It is time for change”.

“This will be the most competitive election in Dubbo for a long time. A vote for Country Labor is a smart vote. It will ensure our community isn’t taken for granted.”
