NSW Labor has welcomed the Federal Government’s and Federal Opposition’s support of electricity price re-regulation which has left the NSW Premier stranded.

NSW Labor Leader Luke Foley pledged to re-regulate electricity prices on 22 June 2017.

In his 2017 Budget Reply Luke Foley said:

“Electricity privatisation and price de-regulation has NOT delivered what the Liberals and Nationals promised. Today, I put the electricity companies – and the Liberals and Nationals - on notice.

We will re-regulate the electricity companies to ensure that consumers are treated fairly. A Labor government will eliminate energy company super profits to make electricity more affordable for families.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian criticised Labor’s promise and claimed that the deregulation had benefited families – even as power bills were hitting record highs.

Mr Foley has welcomed the news that Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten are supporting the re-regulation of electricity prices.

This now leaves Premier Berejiklian stranded with her commitment to a crude ideology of privatisation and deregulation.

To have her Liberal colleague Malcolm Turnbull backing the re-regulation of electricity prices is a humiliation for her.

Quotes attributable to NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley

“I promised to re-regulate electricity bills because I will not stand by and let family budgets be crushed by high power prices.

“The NSW Liberals deregulated the electricity market in 2014 and stood by doing nothing while the electricity companies gouged away.

“Now that Malcolm Turnbull is backing re-regulation too, will Premier Berejiklian admit she got it wrong?”
