Camden Parents Raise Concerns About More School Demountables

NSW Labor leader Luke Foley joined Labor’s candidate for Camden, Sally Quinnell, at Camden South Public School today to reaffirm his commitment to putting schools and hospitals before the knockdown and rebuild of Sydney stadiums.

They were joined by parents sharing their concerns that playground space will shrink as more demountables are shipped in as permanent fixtures with 13 already added to the school.

NSW Labor last year exposed plans by the Berejiklian Government to park thousands more demountables on school grounds to keep up with the overcrowding crisis in schools- that means some children at Camden South P.S. may never be taught in a classroom with brick walls.

Camden is one of the fastest growth areas of Sydney, adding pressure to school class sizes.

Students are crammed into classrooms across the region- including 84 demountables.

Department of Education figures show Camden South P.S at 100 percent capacity in 2017.

Seven other schools in the region are also at capacity.

The NSW Government is taking the lazy option of using prefabricated classrooms instead of investing in nearby land for permanent structures.

The maintenance backlog for the Camden electorate sits at $4.06 million dollars- but could be cleared 665 times by the Berejiklian Government’s $2.7 billion dollar stadium splurge.

Mr Foley’s visit to Camden was part of the ‘Schools and Hospitals before Stadiums’ bus tour.

The tour gives Mr Foley the opportunity to talk to local communities directly about the NSW Government’s failed stadium policy, one year out from the 2019 state election.

Quotes attributable to NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley

“The $2.7 billion stadium splurge is a scandalous waste of money. That money should go to schools and hospitals; they come first and will always do so under a Labor government.”

“Fixing up schools in Camden should be the Berejiklian Government’s priority – not knocking down and rebuilding two Sydney stadiums.

Quotes attributable to Labor candidate for Camden Sally Quinnell

“Camden teachers and students need well-maintained facilities to create the best learning environments. “The community has a right to be angry that they are being over-looked while this government splurges $2.7 billion on Sydney stadiums.”
