BEREJIKLIAN ANNOUNCEMENT FAILS TO SEGREGATE RADICALISED INMATES FROM OTHER YOUTH- LABOR CALLS FOR HIGH RISK UNITS

-->

NSW Labor Leader Luke Foley has branded the Berejiklian Government’s de-radicalisation announcement today as weak, instead calling for the creation of a high risk unit inside the juvenile justice system to segregate radicalised detainees.

Mr Foley says the clear and present danger of teenage terror suspects radicalising other detainees through prayer groups and preaching extremist ideology is not being adequately addressed by the Berejiklian Government.

The NSW Opposition and Public Service Association are calling on the government to establish a segregation unit to house high risk inmates. The problem is further compounded by restrictions on juvenile justice staff from carrying weapons or wearing protective gear.

The high risk units would deliver specialist programs to detainees whilst protecting staff and other inmates from extremism and violence.

Quotes attributable to NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley

“What is needed is action to separate the maddest and baddest from the wider population of juvenile detainees.

“The Berejiklian Government’s announcement today just doesn’t go far enough. Frankly, monitoring terror suspects’ phone calls and letters should have been happening well before now.”
